The beginning of the end

Tomorrow marks a big day for the Vos family, Audrey will begin to wear her thumb guard. For two and a half years that little left thumb has been her best friend, and now it is time to say good-bye. We had decided to "take it away" for two reasons 1) the dentist said that we have until age three before she does real damage to the shape of her mouth 2) we can only wonder how many germs and bacteria have entered our house through that cute but dirty little thumb. So for the next three to four weeks day and night she will wear a rubber thumb guard. I am sad for her. Another day where parenting means choosing what is best and not what is easiest. It seems like I have had a lot of those lately!

We had a great week getting back into the swing of things after being scattered abroad. Reuben is doing really well at night and we are getting close to sleeping through. Hooray! I tried to get the kids out and about as much as possible this week because cold days are around the corner and errands will take a lot more effort with all of those coats and mittens. We went to the park a few times too. Jordan had to play a lot of catch up at work this week from being sick and being in Florida. I had one PC show this week too. I am patting myself on the back because I got out the baby books Friday night. I am far from where I should be, but a little progress was made. Yea me!

Saturday Jonah had a sleep over with his best friend James. He is so old! Rumor has it that it went really well! Audrey went to stay at Aunt Tori's, and she came back with curly hair and make up so she obviously had a great time! Jordan and I got Ruby Tuesday to go and a movie. We ate supper in the living room (which we think is a big treat) and had ourselves a little date night. It was great! Fewer kids to get ready and out the door before 7:00am also gave me the chance to join Jordan on praise team . It had been a year and a half since I sang on a Sunday morning, and I had so much fun!

I hope that I am not disappointed because I am really looking forward to the opportunity to getting a few things done this week. My mom comes on Tuesday. I am getting Reuben's "6 month" pictures taken that morning. (Yes, that will be a day after he turns 8 months. Big oops there!) That afternoon I am organizing the kids clothes and putting everything that is too small but laying around into labeled totes! Friday is my Christmas shopping and prep day. A couple of friends and I are taking turns watching kids and shopping so that we can have a stress free holiday! My expectations are high! It seems unreal that I am thinking about Christmas already, but with Jonah prancing around the house practicing his song for the Christmas program I am really getting in the mood!

So minus the thumb (literally) we are looking forward to a good week. I hope that Audrey can make the adjustment!

Oh happy Day!

I am cautiously announcing a dairy victory!  (Cautiously, because I have declared victory before only to have to have to recant my declaration!)  I have been cooking with low reacting dairy products and have not noticed any effects on Reuben or Elise!  :)  I have been letting them have one meal with baked in dairy each day.  (We have skipped a day or two because so many of the recipes in my rotation are d-free now that I had to make an effort to put it in!)  I have been able to use butter, buttermilk and in a few recipes I used half dairy milk half non dairy.  Why is this so exciting?  First, we went to a picnic the other day and I didn't read labels.  I didn't have to be "that mom."  Second, I will be able to save some money!  D-free chocolate chips can be expensive, and real food butter substitutes are expensive.  Third, I don't have to experiment with nasty d-free cookie recipes any more!  If it never gets better ...

Signs of the times

Jonah was sitting at the table yesterday and said "Mom, I was thinkin' 'bout somethin'.  I want a girlfriend." "What?" "I want a girlfriend? "How about I just be your girlfriend?" "No, I want a little one." "Where did you hear about girlfriends" "Gramma let me borrow her DVD when I had my tonsils out and that boy had a little girlfriend.  I want one." I cannot think of what he watched or what might have reminded him about this concept. Audrey was running ahead on our walk yesterday "Look mom!  I can run fast and I don't even have things in my ears!"  I assume this means earbuds that would connect to her ipod!
