Kindergarten!

I have had a few people ask what we are doing with Jonah for school this year.  We are doing a couple of different things.  We began using a curriculum called My Father's World in July.  For the most part I like it.  I had researched it quite a bit so there have not been a lot of surprises.  I am figuring out how to tweak it to fit him and adding some math as needed because I thought that we could step it up a notch there.  Jonah has had a pretty good attitude about the whole thing, and that has been one of my main goals.  Most kids his age are excited about school and so curious and eager to learn that I just don't want to squelch that!  We started early so that we can take a chunk of time off for Christmas and baby this winter without extending school too far into summer!  I have been taking advantage of the fact that he loves to be read to and spend a little Jonah/Mommy time each day reading chapter books.  We just finished "Little House in the Big Woods" and have a trip planned to Living History farms that I am really excited about.  (I hope he will be too!)
We have also open enrolled him into the West Des Moines school district's home school assistance program.  They have enrichment classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and a field trip each month.  We have a picnic next week where we can meet his teachers and then he begins classes after Labor Day.  He will take Spanish, Writing and PE on Tuesday and Art and Science on Thursday.  It is not dual enrollment where he would jump in and out of the "regular" classroom, but a class for just home schoolers.  They group the Kindergarten and 1st grades together.  I am curious to see what he thinks of it.  He is excited.
The other question I get is "What do you do with the other two?"  Reuben has still been laying down in the morning even if he doesn't nap so that is taking care of itself (for now!)  Audrey spends most of the time with us.  She tries to keep up and or do something parallel to us if she can.  Once she looses interest she is more than welcome to go find her own fun!  It is pretty interactive so obviously she can sing with us and watch experiments.  The actual sit at the table time is minimal.
We have had a great experience so far.  I curious to see what bumps we hit along the way and how we adjust as our family grows and changes, but I am thankful for a fun beginning!

Enjoying the day!

A Very Late Posting of 1st Day of Enrichment Class!

Yep, enrichment classes started over a month ago and I am just now posting the "First Day of Class" photos.  This year we cut back to just one day.  It is lovely.  Jonah and Audrey are both taking art and science.  Jonah is also taking drama.  I am really curious to see how he does with that because he has been really excited about it.  The back packs are completely unnecessary, but a must for the back to class picture!     Getting Ready to head out!   Miss Poser as she gets ready to go inside!    Way too cool for this   Me too Mom!

A little extra help

I had heard that age 8 was when a mom feels like a child can really help out around the house.  I must have an exceptional child because Jonah has become very helpful at 7 1/2!  :)    I kept asking him to load the washing machine, and then one day I heard it running!  He took it upon himself to start the machine as well.  A couple of quick lessons and he was good to go.  We are working on load size.  At first two shirts constituted a load.  Then after explaining water waste he tried washing every piece of cloth in the house at once.  It was amazing to me how helpful the extra pair of hands has been the last couple weeks.  I am loving that this is still an exciting new chore that he is eager to help with!     I taught him how to make scrambled eggs, and Jonah now thinks he is the scrambled egg master. He would making them twice a day if I would let him.  Egg consumption in our home was high, a...
