This may be a boring blog entry, but no one is forcing you to read this so here it goes!
A friend asked me a few years back "Have you ever thought about switching to cloth diapers?" "Are you crazy? No!" was my oh too quick response. I had been around cloth diapers just enough to know that they were no longer pins and rubber pants like the good old days, but I had no intention of going down that road. I had heard people talk of wet bags and hemp inserts and did not wish to complicate my life in that way. Something changed, however, somewhere in during my third pregnancy. I think it was fearing that I would be buying diapers the rest of my life. I looked into it, but just enough to be sticker shocked by the "Cadillac" of cloth diapers ($20 a diaper!) I thought that it was going to be a huge investment and not worth the hassle since I hadn't started with Jonah. I did however go back to my friend and tell her that I no longer thought that she was crazy.
Even with Audrey potty training so early I returned time and time again to the idea of cloth diapers. Jordan kept reminding me that I could hardly keep up with the laundry the way it was. Why add another couple of (disgusting) loads? Then the email that changed everything, my sister had found an affordable cloth diaper. I began researching and saw that I would not have to sell half of what I own for the initial cloth diaper investment. I talked with Jordan and we decided to try to pad Reuben's night time disposable to help him keep from leaking through each night. (He is constantly leaking through, waking up wet and needed new pjs at 4:00 am.) The obvious progression is that if I was going to be washing the insert why waste the disposable and if he was in one over night why not Audrey too? It all starting snowballing from there.
As of today I have 4 diaper covers 4 inserts and 5 extra liners. (There is an entirely new language that one begins to speak when starting cloth diapering. I was so confused at first!) I hopefully have another 2 covers and 6 liners coming. I have really been shopping the deals and think that I am getting started for about $65 which this Dutch girl is pretty happy about. Not the top of the line cloth diapers, but I am hopefull that I made good choices. Reuben is in his first diaper tonight and we will see how this goes! I doubt that I will be a full timer, but I hope to come out ahead in the long run!
