Back home (and back to the Doctor!)

At this time last week Jordan was dropping off the older two and I was packing our suitcases for Florida. Jordan had a business trip that I got to piggy back on and since I am still nursing Reuben he came too.

Reuben did pretty well on the flights down. We had a layover in TN and that two hour flight was interesting because we were separated from Jordan and I had to sit between (although more accurately put on top of) a guy that looked like Harold Krenshaw from Monk and a woman in her mid 40s who wasn't a "baby person." Reuben kicked her the entire flight. I told her she paid her dues and I hoped that she never had to sit by a baby on a plane again.

Florida was beautiful. I think that I was made for paradise. Jordan was not and said I had to come back to Iowa. There were tons of shops and places to eat right by the hotel and I enjoyed the simplicity of walking for whatever was needed. It reminded me of the small town I grew up in when I would walk to Terlow's Market for milk and to the post office to get the mail. Reuben did not enjoy sharing a hotel room with his daddy and woke every time Jordan coughed. I also must have let some dairy sneak in my diet so we spent Friday spitting up everywhere (I really hope they clean our room well!) and yelling quite loudly. Jordan got to do a few touristy things and had supper on the beach Thursday and took a boat ride through the everglades on Friday. I joined the group for a water taxi ride on Saturday and got to see the ocean before we boarded the plane for home. Reuben did not do well on the rides back to Iowa so neither did his parents! Jordan and I agree that we are glad that I went, but we won't sign up to go with a 7 month old again. It was a good trip. It was not a great vacation!

I didn't get as much reading and praying done as I had wanted, but I did a little journaling and now hope to be able to follow through on a few goals. One thing that I did realize that Reuben must start sleeping through the night! He got up twice a night through out the trip (which unfortunately has been par for the coarse lately) and even though I wasn't chasing the other two I was still very tired! We will be working on that in the coming weeks as well as weaning. The nondairy diet has taken its toll on me. I have been told that for the sake of the whole Reuben will be done nursing. I am sure that it will be best, but I am a little sad. (I never thought that I would say that about nursing!)

Sunday we got our kids back! The report is that they obeyed and pooped regularly. (These are the things a mom cares about!) We met up with my mom's family for my Grandpa's 90th birthday at church and then a party. He is a great man, and a great time was had by all.

We were all excited to be back home last night, but I could tell Reuben was still off. I took him to the Dr this afternoon and yes, he has ear infection AGAIN!. Poor guy. We are being recognized by the staff in all parts of the clinic now. It is funny how much pride I had in how healthy Jonah was when he was a baby and how that pride has melted away. So much for the healthy fresh start upon on return home!

Oh happy Day!

I am cautiously announcing a dairy victory!  (Cautiously, because I have declared victory before only to have to have to recant my declaration!)  I have been cooking with low reacting dairy products and have not noticed any effects on Reuben or Elise!  :)  I have been letting them have one meal with baked in dairy each day.  (We have skipped a day or two because so many of the recipes in my rotation are d-free now that I had to make an effort to put it in!)  I have been able to use butter, buttermilk and in a few recipes I used half dairy milk half non dairy.  Why is this so exciting?  First, we went to a picnic the other day and I didn't read labels.  I didn't have to be "that mom."  Second, I will be able to save some money!  D-free chocolate chips can be expensive, and real food butter substitutes are expensive.  Third, I don't have to experiment with nasty d-free cookie recipes any more!  If it never gets better ...

Signs of the times

Jonah was sitting at the table yesterday and said "Mom, I was thinkin' 'bout somethin'.  I want a girlfriend." "What?" "I want a girlfriend? "How about I just be your girlfriend?" "No, I want a little one." "Where did you hear about girlfriends" "Gramma let me borrow her DVD when I had my tonsils out and that boy had a little girlfriend.  I want one." I cannot think of what he watched or what might have reminded him about this concept. Audrey was running ahead on our walk yesterday "Look mom!  I can run fast and I don't even have things in my ears!"  I assume this means earbuds that would connect to her ipod!
